Our Heroes/I Nostri Eroi

Below is a description of Tara’s and Emily’s race through the eyes of their father,  John, dated April 19, 2016.

Emily and Tara finished their Boston Marathon runs charity yesterday.  On a perfect weather day (for spectators, that is), they each competed the course from Hopkinton to Boston, enjoying the crowds and festive atmosphere.

Their races were very different.

Tara had a fun inaugural Boston. The warm and sunny day slowed her down like it did most of the runners, but her winter training paid off when she reached Newton’s hills. She looked in control and comfortable when we saw her at mile 25, just outside of Kenmore Square. Even after 26 miles, she ended the race with a strong kick down Boylston Street to the finish line! Finished in the 4’s.

Emily’s second Boston Marathon couldn’t have been more unlike her first. She battled hip issues from early in the race. By midrace, she was in pain but determined to continue. From about mile 17 on, she had to stop repeatedly to stretch and rest her hip. By race’s end, she couldn’t run and couldn’t put much weight on her right side. She gutted it out like a true marathoner, and limped across the finish line in 5 hours and change. As she said later, “Some years are like that, I guess.” In the medical tent, doctors suspected a stress fracture. She’s up for an x-ray today.

Tara and Emily say they love the cheers from the Marathon crowds, but are more grateful for your contributions.

We’re sure you join us in our pride over the girls’ commitment and achievement. Thanks very much for your kind contributions and best wishes. Let me know when I can pitch in for you! Best, JLS
